FATHER TOM'S CORNER

BOOKS of the MONTH:

"Keeping Faith"
by Jodi Picoult.
This is an interesting page turner about a young girl who under duress is visited by God which causes quite a stir.     There are some adult themes so be aware.
"Whistling in the Dark"
 by Leslie Kagan
Two young twin sisters have a small town summer adventure.  What I found captivating was the character and strength yet longing for family that is so real in these youngsters.   You fall in love with these kids and want to protect them.

A Thousand Splendid Suns

A Thousand Splendid Suns

"A Thousand Splendid Suns" is the follow-up work of Khaled Hosseini who authored "The Kite Runner".  This story is again set in Afghanistan and tells of the times from the Soviet invasion to the reign of the Taliban and post-Taliban.  Well written and challenging.

The Chronicles of Narnia

The book is a series.  If you have not yet read them I recommend them to you.  The "Chronicles of Narnia".  The first "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" was  released as a movie last year.  The second in this 7-book work, "Prince Caspian" will be released as a movie during the month of May 2008.  The series is about Christianity, an imaginary, magical world and the children  Christ (The Lion, Aslan) calls into this adventure to give their aid.
C.S.Lewis is the author of this worthy work.

Book Reviews

The Book Thief

The author has written two novels.  His name is Markus Zurick.  Death is the narrator of this Nazi era story.  The heroine is Liesel - a child with great courage and a story about the power of literature to strengthen us.

The Ultimate Life

This is a follow=up on Jim Stowell's The Ultimate Gift. I think you will enjoy.  The young hero of the first book is put to the test and comes out with solid approaches to life.

OSAMA

"Osama" is inspired by a true story and the first film to be made in Afghanistan after the fall of the Taliban.  It is stunning, eye-opening and definitely not for children. This movie tells truth but is very difficult to see.  You will be moved and perhaps angry.

The Ultimate Gift

The movie "The Ultimate Gift" is available on DVD and may be rented.  The film version of the book many of you have read and enjoyed.  It won the 2006 "Crystal Heart Award" and the "Dove Foundation" seal of approval.  The story is about a young man's journey to become alive.

"Enchanted"

If you feel like getting out to a film this spoof of Disney's classic animation is a fun time.  Not exactly a "Die Hard" for the guys but an enjoyable film.   There are some scary moments with the old witch of Snow White and a dragon so be advised.   If you feel like staying home (less expensive too) the "Ultimate Gift" has been released as a film.  Though there are some differences from the book it is still well done.
