News from the Scoutmaster

We had a couple of successful campouts this year, both involving lots of snow. At the Klondike competition in January, we earn two first place awards out of the ten events we competed in. This was against 17 patrols in all. Great job to those who competed! The temperature never got above freezing the whole weekend.

Our Anniversary campout was in the middle of the biggest snow storm of the year. That made for an interesting Friday night to say the least. A few tents could not handle the weight of the snow. On Saturday we successfully built a rope bridge that spanned approximately 60ft. It was sturdy enough to hold anyone who wanted to cross. We received many compliments on it.

After the first couple of campouts in the cold and snow, we have been blessed with unbelievably good weather for our next two. In March, we went on a 10 mile hike in Red River Gorge, Kentucky. We saw some great scenery and even picked up trash along the road we hiked. It was the first time down there for almost everyone. Everybody had a great time and want to go back soon.

In April, we participated in a district spring camporee. The theme was cooking and cooking safety. The boys learned many new skills that will be implemented on future campouts. We even have proof that they do know how to do the dishes. All of our meals were cooked in a dutch oven. We received a first place ribbon for first aid in the kitchen and a third place ribbon for our one-pot meal. The boys even did two skits at the closing fire. Kyle Block and Mark Juengling were called out to be a part of the Order of the Arrow(Brotherhood of Scouting). Congratulations!!
